Success of GNU must be measured empirically

The Referendum Party (RP) says the success or failure of the Government of National Unity (GNU) must be measured empirically and has set out what it believes to be the very least that South Africans can expect.

The party says that for the GNU to be considered a success it must make a meaningful and measurable improvement in economic growth (GDP), unemployment (UR), and crime (murder rate). It has published the following targets:

  • GDP growth rate - a minimum of 3.0% by the end of 2025
  • Official Unemployment rate - below 30.0% by the end of 2025
  • Murder rate - below 30.0 murders per 100k people by the end of 2025

RP leader Phil Craig says, “The GNU is a compromise agreement, and at times a very uncomfortable one. For the sake of all South Africans we hope it will succeed, but we must watch it closely. If it cannot deliver meaningful positive change in the most critical areas, then it is not fit for purpose. At RP, we have real concerns that the ANC has deliberately kept the DA away from all the economic levers of power and that therefore nothing significant will change. By setting what should be easily achievable targets up front, we will quickly see whether the GNU is a success or a failure.”
