The Referendum Party (RP) warmly welcomes President Ramaphosa’s commitment to non-racialism which he told parliament this week was neither a concession, nor an act of charity. If these words are to have any meaning however, then the GNU must immediately begin to repeal all race-based legislation.
The RP shares the President’s view that we must create a society where all enjoy equal opportunities regardless of their race. Not only do race-based policies flout this principle, but as we have seen by their abject failure over the last three decades, they do not work in practice either.
This is because instead of addressing the root causes of inequality such as a lack of education, a shortage of job opportunities, and affordable high quality transport links, race-based policy attempts to manipulate the outcomes rather than the causes. This is the exact opposite of creating equal opportunities for all.
The ANC have made a mockery of the concept of non-racialism, choosing instead to pursue Verwoerdian values. Words are cheap, but ‘by their deeds shall ye know them’. The GNU must now demonstrate that when it comes to race based policy, it is not going to serve up more of the same.
