The Referendum Party (RP) notes a statement by the ANC calling for a referendum to be held in the Western Sahara based upon the Sahrawi peoples right to self-determination.
International Law is emphatically clear, all people have a right to self-determination.
Accordingly, the RP believes that the ANC are entirely correct that a referendum should be held in the Western Sahara. However, the right to self-determination does not just apply in other countries, it applies in South Africa too.
Phil Craig, leader of the Referendum Party says, “When the subject of a referendum on Cape Independence is raised based upon the Western Cape peoples right to self-determination, ANC officials regularly respond by pointing out that South Africa is a unitary state. So is Morocco. The ANC is applying the right to self-determination selectively. The United Nations has made it clear that territorial integrity cannot be used to hollow out the right of self-determination. Whether or not South Africa is a unitary state is irrelevant.”
The principles of international law must be applied consistently and objectively.
The RP believes that South Africa would be a fairer and more prosperous country were it to cease to be a unitary state, and actively encourages communities within South Africa to claim their right to self-determination. This includes not just the Western Cape people, but also Afrikaners and Zulus, with the hope that these groups will then inspire others to do the same. In doing so, they would by default bring an end to the unitary state and communities can then cooperate on the basis of mutual benefit rather than as a result of national government diktat.
